About ICMCA - Complete History - Volunteer Opportunities

The Indian Classical Music Circle of Austin (ICMCA) is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization formed in 1991 by a voluntary group of Austinites. The ICMCA’s objective is to arrange programs by accomplished Indian classical performing artists, thereby enriching the cultural life of Austin and increasing the awareness of the rich classical heritage of India. Most of the ICMCA programs are co-sponsored by the Center for Asian Studies, University of Texas at Austin.

The ICMCA organizes at least four formal concerts per calendar year, but since 1993 has presented five or more recitals annually. It works with organizations and individuals who directly sponsor artists for the North American circuit. In the ICMCA’s presentations, an elected committee strives to bring as much variety as possible, which depends on the schedules and availability of the artists. A list of all the programs we have presented in our history can be found here.

The concerts in a calendar year usually include at least one dance, one instrumental and one vocal recital. An attempt is made to maintain a balance between various styles of classical music and dance, - Hindustani and Carnatic, i.e. North Indian and South Indian styles. In addition to these formal concerts, the ICMCA attempts to provide opportunities for connoisseurs to appreciate the talents of other artists visiting Austin in the informal format of “house concerts”. House concerts are held at someone’s residence or in a public venue. Such concerts are arranged by generous sponsors, with assistance from the ICMCA, and are made possible through funds generated by voluntary donations.

As an organization primarily interested in the promotion and enjoyment of classical Indian music and dance, the ICMCA tries to coordinate activities and programs with other local organizations interested in Indian classical music and dance forms. When possible, performances are co-sponsored for mutual benefit.

A year’s membership in the ICMCA entitles its members to free tickets for all formal concert performances during a calendar year. This commitment results in considerable savings over purchasing tickets for individual events, but most of all it helps us in advance planning and scheduling of concerts. We also keep members informed of other Indian cultural events around town via e-mail, telephone calls, and mailings.

We solicit your participation in the activities of the Indian Classical Music Circle of Austin. You can become a member, attend performances, advertise in our brochure, or volunteer your time, resources, and knowledge through the managing committee.

ICMCA welcomes your suggestions and assistance in identifying artists and programs seasons, keeping in mind that the ICMCA strives to maintain an optimum mix and variety in the program content. We also invite other comments, suggestions, and ideas you may have to improve the ICMCA. Finally, we encourage you to renew your membership or become a new member for 2006 either online or by check and regular post. And please let your friends know that when it comes to Indian Classical Music, ICMCA really is the place to be!
