Rajan and Sajan Misra
If the aim of musical partnership, better known as Jugalbandi, is to bring home the subtleties and refinements of music as naturally and as spontaneously as in solo performances, then Pandit Rajan and Pandit Sajan Misra must be acclaimed as the best Indian Classical Music has to offer today. With their immense skill, imagination, energy and effortless elegance, they have raised the status of Jugalbandi musics to heights never seen before. Representing the Varanasi, Benares tradition of Khyal singing, these two brothers had their training under the guidance of their father, a well known vocalist, Pandit Hanuman Prasad Misra, and their uncle, Pandit Gopal Prasad Misra, one of the celebrated sarangi players of India. Today, Rajan-Sajan Misra, as these brothers are popularly known, are considered the foremost exponents of the Benares style of singing. For their contributions to Indian Classical Music, a national panel unanimously selected them to receive the prestigious Gandharwa National Award for 1994-95. It is a measure of their popularity that they always command huge audiences wherever they perform be it in India or abroad. Endowed with voices that are rich and well blended, their singing is characterized by unusual beauty, energy and imagination. In addition to the Khyal, the Misra brothers excel in rending the light classical forms such as the Tappa, the Tarana and the Bhajan. Rajan and Sajan Misra performed
under the auspices of ICMCA in 1995 and in 2000 and and we are
delighted to have them perform once again for the appreciative
audiences of Austin.
